On Beauty

Are we all more beautiful than we think?

I just saw an interesting experiment with women where a forensic artist from the FBI makes two sketches on the same person based both on the description that the sketch subject gave of themselves and on a second person’s description. The whole time the sketcher was not able to see any of the people whom he was talking to.

The results were astonishing. All of them look less attractive on the sketch where they described themselves than on the one where someone else describes them.

This is the second study about women and how we perceive ourselves that I read in two days.

On the first one, researchers asked women how good they felt about their looks and concluded that when the researcher's assistant, a young woman, was wearing make up they felt worse about themselves then when she didn’t wear make up. And if there was an attractive man in the room as they answer the questions they felt even worse about their self image.

I don’t want to get into the importance of beauty and why is it that we all seem to perceive ourselves as way worse than what we actually are, or this post will turn out to be a short book. So all I do want to say is, let us all be grateful for all the things that make us look good, and forget about the ones that we would like to change. I have a feeling that if we start to think of ourselves as pretty, the world will think that we are gorgeous.

Here is the video on the sketching experiment, I think all women should watch it. If you want to see it full screen follow this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=litXW91UauE&noredirect=1
